Miracle Healing in Christianity

Christianity is a faith based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. This Abrahamic monotheistic religion has 2.38 billion followers and represents one-third of the global population. Those who become Christians have to make a commitment to follow Christ. For many, this involves giving up everything they hold dear to follow Jesus.

The Bible describes the gift of healing as a sign of God’s grace and holiness. However, in practice, the miraculous was usually not the primary goal of healing. Instead, the main purpose was to demonstrate the sanctity of the person praying. In fact, the sacrament of the anointing of the sick with oil was replaced with extreme unction, which was reserved for those who were near death.

Healings in the Gospels are numerous and varied. One of the most notable miracles was the restoration of a dead child. Another was the healing of an epileptic boy. Others are more modest. Among lay Christians, people pray for one person at a time.

Aside from the apostles, some other people had miraculous abilities. These included prophets and evangelists. Philip was an apostle who performed exorcisms. Other apostolic gifts included discernment of spirits and telepathy.

The biblical miracles that were most notable were those performed by Jesus. Some of these included restoring the leper, healing the deaf and dumb, and raising the dead.

There were other signs of God’s grace, such as the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This gave believers freedom from the power of sin.
