Miracle Healing in Christianity

Christianity is the largest religion in the world, and it’s based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. It has over 2.38 billion followers and is a monotheistic, Abrahamic religion.

The New Testament teaches that Jesus Christ came to bring freedom from sin. This includes healings and miracles. In addition, baptism is a necessary part of becoming a Christian.

A third of the global population is Christian. Typically, people in the Global South come to faith through healing and deliverance. Some of these Christians have had miraculous experiences and others have not.

Historically, Christian healings have been limited to those in grave danger of death. By the middle ages, Christians expected that healings would be rare. Church leaders often discouraged prayer for the sick.

Early Christians believed that sickness was demonic. They incorporated Neoplatonic notions of the body as a prison of the soul.

Church leaders appointed elders in each church. These leaders were committed to the Lord in whom they believed. However, church leaders limited the scope of the apostles’ ministry.

One exception was the anointing of the sick. The apostles were given power to raise the dead, heal the sick, and cast out demons. But their healings never included miracles such as walking on water or feeding 5,000.

Despite the limits of the apostles’ healing ministry, the gospel spread across the globe. For three centuries, half a million new converts joined the church every generation.

During the fourth century, church growth accelerated. Churches continued to preach the gospel in large services.
