Miracle Healing in Christian History
Christians believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to heal. It was through the power of the Holy Spirit that people were able to come to faith in Christ. This power led some people to leave everything behind to follow Jesus. Jesus was able to heal people in circumstances that would have fueled his enemies’ anger.
The nineteenth century was a time of great excitement and revival for Christians. Missionaries began to spread across the world and revivals were held in cities and villages throughout Europe. People found hope in the experience of forgiveness from sin and the “second blessing” of sanctification – the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This meant freedom from the power and pollution of sin. Some Christians even believed that it would free them from sickness.
Christian evangelism has long been central to the Christian subject. However, the globalized charismatic movement has reinvigorated militant Christian subjects and has permeated the mainstream of Christian practice. Christian prayer is a vital weapon of spiritual warfare. Prayer is also central to redemptive praxis.
In the fifth century, the church leaders identified saints who had exceptional faith. These saints had the power to heal people and cast out demons. They were also sent to shrines of martyrs for healing.
