Miracle Healing in Christianity

Christianity is a religion based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. It is the world’s largest religious movement. Currently, there are over two billion followers of the religion.

Christianity is a largely Abrahamic monotheistic faith. Although it is not a competitor with modern medical science, it has been associated with healings since the first century. The Gospels abound with healing stories.

In the early church, speaking in tongues was a gift for believers. The Apostles were commissioned by Jesus to cast out unclean spirits. However, church leaders restricted the practice of prayer for the sick. Moreover, harsh penances discouraged Christians from going to confession.

As more Christians came to faith, they began to pray for family members in hospitals and grocery stores. Their prayers often produced miraculous healing.

The book of Acts narrates the time when believers spoke in tongues. Church leaders also identified saints. Evangelists continued to preach the gospel in large services.

Miracles varied in type and location. Some took place in private homes, while others occurred in public places. Sometimes, the gifts of healing were given to unbelievers. Other times, they were commanded by people with healing powers.

Most new converts joined the church after a healing. They were often nominal Christians, who were attracted to the gifts and to higher-status jobs. But some left everything to follow Christ.
