Miracles in Christianity
Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world. It is a monotheistic religion based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth. The faith claims to have 2.38 billion followers worldwide.
The Bible contains numerous miracles. These vary in type and place. Miracles can include healing, prophecy, and discerning of spirits.
In the earliest days of Christianity, people would seek the guidance of saints in order to get healed. They also prayed for spiritual favors, such as increasing measures of the Holy Spirit and wisdom.
Healings were considered sacraments. People believed that the anointing of the sick with oil would prepare them for heaven. After Constantine converted in 312, healings were relegated to the margins. Those who needed healing sought prayer from “desert fathers” and shrines of martyrs.
Aside from sacraments, there was a second blessing: the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This was a significant event in the lives of many Protestants. Besides bringing freedom from pollution of sin, it ushered in a new age.
The book of Acts narrates the time when believers could speak in tongues. This was a significant milestone in the development of Christianity. However, no command from the Bible calls all believers to do this.
The Gospels have numerous stories of healings. Some of the most famous were reported in Matthew, Luke, and John. Among these were the healing of the paralyzed man, the cure of an epileptic boy, and the healing of a leper.
