Miracle Healing in Christianity

Founded by Jesus of Nazareth, Christianity is the world’s largest religion, with 2.38 billion followers. It’s a monotheistic Abrahamic faith. Christians believe that they can be forgiven of their sins by the grace of God.

The Bible teaches that salvation comes through faith. It also tells us that miracles often occur around conversions. The book of Acts narrates a time when believers spoke in tongues.

While this practice was common in the Middle Ages, church leaders often questioned its legitimacy. Some questioned the existence of demons or spirits. Others said that they were free from sickness. Adding religious work to the equation undermined the concept of grace.

During the Middle Ages, healing tended to be more of a show than a fact. In the twelfth century, the term extreme unction came into use. It was a form of sacrament, and was limited to those in grave danger.

Some Christians believed that their bodies could be healed and made whole through a “new birth.” They were forgiven of their sins. They were sanctified, or infilled with the Holy Spirit.

During the fifth century, some serious Christians fled the corruption of urban life. They sought prayer from so-called desert fathers. These prayer-saints had prayers that were highly likely to produce healing.

The book of Acts outlines the growth of the church. For three centuries, half a million new converts joined the church every generation. In the fourth century, the church’s growth began to accelerate.
